Adopt a Coffee Tree & Protect Gorilla Habitat — Sip by Sip, You Make a Difference to OUR Majestic Mountain Gorillas

  • What this is: A project proposal called “Adopt a Coffee Tree for Conservation” — a sustainable tourism + community livelihood initiative based around Volcanoes National Park (northern Rwanda).
  • Who’s running it: THE CHAMPION’ CAFÉ Ltd in Kinigi, Musanze. They started small (selling coffee bags in 2017) and have grown into organic coffee, local cuisine, barista training and consulting — led by Rwanda’s Official Barista Champion (2009–2010) and an experienced tourist guide.
  • Why it exists (the big problem):
    • Volcanoes National Park is world-famous for mountain gorillas and biodiversity.
    • Rwanda is expanding the park to protect more wildlife habitat.
    • That creates a need to ensure local communities benefit from conservation, so livelihoods improve instead of being squeezed.
    • Coffee is positioned as a strong solution because it’s a valuable export crop and can be farmed responsibly.
  • The opportunity they spotted (tourism angle):
    • In Musanze, many tourists reportedly run out of meaningful cultural activities in the afternoons.
    • The café created a “farm to cup” experience where visitors can learn the full coffee journey — seedlings → farming → harvesting → processing → brewing — near the park and lodges.
  • How the “Adopt a Coffee Tree” model works:
    • Tourists (and global supporters) adopt/purchase one or more coffee trees planted in the buffer zone around the park.
    • Each tree gets a unique ID code so the owner can track it and receive annual updates, photos and impact stories.
    • Farmers plant and care for the trees.
    • Once the coffee matures, the harvest is processed and branded as “The Champion’s Conservation Coffee” and shipped to the sponsor/owner annually.
    • A portion of the revenue supports park expansion, reforestation, and community coffee farming development.
    • Tree owners also pay an annual sustainability fee to cover farming, processing and shipping of their harvest.
  • Stated pricing (as written in the proposal):
    • US$3,000 per tree to purchase/adopt (supporters can choose to pay more).
    • US$2,000 per tree per year sustainability fee.
  • Where the money goes (revenue sharing model):
    • 50%: farmers, production management, and shipping costs of getting your beans to you
    • 40%: Mountain Gorilla conservation + park expansion fund
    • 10%: marketing, logistics, packaging
  • Goals:
    • Promote sustainable coffee farming for conservation + livelihood improvement
    • Engage tourists/supporters directly in conservation
    • Support ecological restoration and park expansion
    • Build a traceable premium conservation coffee brand
  • Expected outcomes:
    • Improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers
    • More community involvement in conservation
    • A sustainable funding mechanism for habitat restoration/park expansion
    • A recognized conservation coffee brand
    • Stronger tourist engagement and long-term partnerships
  • Key partners involved:
    • Rwanda Development Board (RDB)
    • NAEB (coffee production/quality/export support)
    • Local cooperatives
